Orange County residents should be aware of windy conditions starting Friday into the weekend, followed by the potential for heavy rainfall late Sunday into Monday.

Sustained south to southeast winds will be 15 to 20 mph with gusts around 30 mph on Friday, increasing over the weekend with sustained winds between 20 and 25 mph with gusts between 30 and 40 mph, according to Joe Rua.

The lead forecaster for the National Weather Service in Lake Charles, La., announced advisories would likely be needed during that time frame.

“Also, the long southerly fetch and duration of the very breezy south winds will allow tides along the coast to increase,” Rua said. “This may lead to some minor coastal flooding during the high tides on Saturday and Sunday morning.”

Finally, a frontal system will stall to the north late in the weekend and clash with the very warm and moist air to produce a chance for thunderstorms on late Sunday into Monday.

These thunderstorms will have the potential to produce high rainfall rates over a location for a prolonged period of time.

“Therefore, a Marginal to Slight Risk of Excessive Rainfall that may lead to flooding has been outlined for the area,” Rua said.
