Free PFAS testing available for East Selah residents with well water concerns

YAKIMA, Wash. - The Yakima Health District is continuing to offer free well water testing to eligible homes in East Selah.

The tests are for PFAS, which are synthetic chemicals that come from both industrial and consumer products and can have serious health risks when found in drinking water.

This testing stems from contamination found in private wells near the Yakima Training Center, and aims to provide more resources to the affected households in the area.

Exposure to PFAS can lead to health issues like, increased cholesterol levels, decreased birth weights, decreased immune response to vaccines, liver damage, increased risk of blood pressure problems during pregnancy, increased risk of thyroid disease, and increased risk of testicular and kidney cancer.

You can view the recommended safety limits here.

Households must be in the East Selah sampling area and have a private or shared well. To see if you're eligible click here or call (509) 249-6555.

Shawn Magee, Environmental Health Director, Yakima Health District said, “As we begin this important PFAS testing initiative, we are steadfast in our commitment to supporting households in East Selah. Through proactive testing and community engagement, we aim to empower residents with the knowledge and resources they need to safeguard their health and well-being and ensure every resident has access to clean, safe drinking water."
