ALBANY — No matter the level of performance, team’s are always going to be happy to go out and get themselves a win. In sports, it’s not easy to win on any given day.

Despite not having their best outing as a whole, the Alexander baseball team were able to knock off Nelsonville-York for the second time this season, securing the season sweep with a 7-5 win.

“We came in a little bit tired, we played a great game yesterday with Athens and I think that caused us to come in a little bit flat,” said Spartans head coach Jordan Myles. “I just told the boys that I think it’s good that on our worst days, we can still go out and win a baseball game.”

Alexander (5-7) was only able to put together four hits at the plate despite scoring seven runs. Jordan Schulz, Sam Ohms, Nate Jenkins and Jared Truax all grabbed a hit apiece for the Spartans, with Ohms and Truax notching two RBIs each while Jenkins added one of his own. Trent Schaad also knocked in an RBI while Stanley Viny scored two runs for Alexander.

Michael McKibben got the start, throwing four innings while giving up five runs on eight hits. He also walked three batters and recorded one strikeout. Viny then came in for the final three innings of relief, nearly pitching a clean trio of innings as he allowed just one hit with two strikeouts.

Nelsonville-York was the better team at the dish, but their nine-hit outing couldn’t earn them the victory. Logan Meek and Levi Snedden would each drive in a run on two hits apiece while Cameron Sullivan also recorded a multi-hit performance. Caleb Rexford would drive in two runners on one hit while Landen Inman and Gavin Richards also grabbed a hit.

Both teams scored a plethora of runs in the opening inning, with the Buckeyes getting out to a quick 3-0 lead before Alexander took their own lead after a four-run first.

The Buckeyes scored three runs on two singles from Meek and Rexford to build their lead, with Alexander then scoring four runs on three-straight hits, with an RBI double from Jenkins being sandwiched by a one-run single from Ohms and a two-run single from Truax.

Nelsonville-York tied it up in the top of the third with another RBI single off the bat off the bat of Snedden to make it 4-4. Alexander once again responded immediately as a sacrifice fly from Ohms restored their lead.

In the top of the fourth, the Buckeyes crossed another on an RBI single from Sullivan to tie the game once more before the Spartans once again responded by scoring on an error as well as another sacrifice fly, this time from Schaad.

Holding on to a two-run lead, Viny was able to shut Nelsonville-York down on the mound as he quickly worked through batter after batter, before a strikeout ended the game and secured the Spartan victory.

“It’s exactly why we put [Viny] in there,” Myles said of his pitcher after the game. “He’s an experienced pitcher, and the best part is we kept him under his number of pitches in case we need him tomorrow. Did a great job, got us exactly what we needed.”
