In a disturbing case, Estes Carter Thompson III, a former American Airlines flight attendant, has been indicted by a federal grand jury for allegedly recording or attempting to record a minor female passenger using a lavatory aboard an aircraft in September 2023. The indictment includes charges of attempted sexual exploitation of children and possession of child pornography.

The charging documents allege that Thompson video-recorded a 14-year-old female passenger in the lavatory by concealing his iPhone beneath the toilet seat lid. The minor victim discovered the recording device and reported it to her parents, who in turn alerted authorities.

Further investigation revealed additional instances where Thompson surreptitiously recorded minor female passengers in aircraft lavatories. The defendant has been in federal custody since his arrest in January 2024.

The case, part of Project Safe Childhood to combat child sexual exploitation, is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Elianna J. Nuzum. Thompson faces substantial prison sentences if convicted.
