The Oregon freestyle and Greco Roman state wrestling championships were held last weekend in Newberg, and a number of Crook County wrestlers competed.

Most of the Crook County wrestlers competed for the Central Oregon Wrestling Academy, which also included wrestlers from other schools, while one competed for the Cowboy Mat Club.

Three Crook County wrestlers won state titles in both freestyle and Greco Roman. The most notable of those was Makenna Duran, who won the junior girls 130-pound weight class in both styles of wrestling. What made that accomplishment especially impressive is that Duran also won an OSAA state championship, making her just one of six girls and five boys to accomplish the feat of winning all three championships, called the triple crown.

Competing in the boys 16U 126-pound weight class, Chase Hemphill also won both the freestyle and Greco Roman championships, while Jack Lovell, who wrestled in the 14U 106 pound weight class, also won both titles.

Several other Crook County wrestlers won a state championship in either freestyle or Greco Roman.

Otto Huffman won the 12U freestyle championship and was second in Greco Roman. Lauren Echeverria won the 14U girls 97 pound freestyle competition, while Ylyana Sandoval took first in the junior girls 190 pound weight class. Neither girl competed in Greco Roman.

Two more Crook County athletes won state titles in Greco Roman. Cruz Evans was first in the 12U 82 pound weight class, while Jase Seymour, who was the lone wrestler competing for the Cowboy Mat Club, won the boys 12U 86 pound Greco Roman Championship. Seymour was also third in freestyle, while Cruz competed only in Greco Roman.

A number of Crook County athletes also finished second in at least one weight class. Competing in the 14U 83 pound weight class Luke Provost placed second in both styles of wrestling, while Justin Tucker who competed in the 14U 92 pound weight class was second in freestyle and third in Greco Roman. Wrestling at 115 pounds in the 14U girls, Emerie Cox placed second in both Greco Roman and freestyle, while Evan Provost was second in both styles in the boys 16U 106 pound weight class. Alejandro Vargas accomplished the same feat in the 16U 113 pound weight class, while Madden Sandoval was second in the 16U 120 freestyle tournament and third in Greco Roman.

Mayle Yancey finished second in the girls 14U 118 pound freestyle tournament, while Robert Lacey was third in the junior boys 16U Greco Roman tournament and finished sixth in freestyle.

The final Crook County wrestler to place in the tournament was Taylor Echeverria who was fourth in the freestyle 16U girls 130-pound weight class.
