Walmart is looking to increase upward mobility for its employees, removing the requirement of a college degree to apply for higher-salaried management positions, according to an ABC News interview with Walmart president and CEO John Furner.

The move opens up a path for good employees to make their way to six-figure salaries even if they can’t afford the expense of going to college.

Duane Morris unemployment attorney Michael Bernick joined KCBS Radio to talk about the lifting of those requirements and whether he believes it’s a winning strategy.

“It’s a movement that’s been going on in the workforce feel for some time,” Bernick said. “In terms of two dynamics: One – eliminating college requirements, for many jobs, for many management jobs, which makes a lot of sense. And also trying to improve mobility within firms and in other words, promote people from within. Again, a dynamic that makes a lot of sense.”

And Bernick said Walmart is far from the only corporation testing this type of employee promotion strategy.

“It’s a real push within the work force field,” he said. “And it’s very, very positive.”
