For The Lion King prequel directed Barry Jenkins , Beyoncé once again voices Nala, just as she did in the 2019 remake of The Lion King . Joining Bey in reprising their characters are Donald Glover as Simba, Seth Rogen as Pumbaa, Billy Eichner as Timon, and John Kani as Rafiki.

New voices joining the cast include, Aaron Pierre as Mufasa, and Kelvin Harrison Jr. as Scar. Mads Mikkelsen , Thandie Newton , and of course Blue Ivy Carter as Kiara, the daughter of Simba and Nala, a character who last appeared in 1998’s animated The Lion King II: Simba's Pride .

According to official plot synopsis provided by Disney “ Mufasa: The Lion King enlists Rafiki to relay the legend of Mufasa to young lion cub Kiara (Blue Ivy), daughter of Simba and Nala, with Timon and Pumbaa lending their signature schtick. Told in flashbacks, the story introduces Mufasa as an orphaned cub, lost and alone until he meets a sympathetic lion named Taka —the heir to a royal bloodline. The chance meeting sets in motion an expansive journey of an extraordinary group of misfits searching for their destiny — their bonds will be tested as they work together to evade a threatening and deadly foe.”

When recently talking to Good Morning America about working with the mother daughter duo on the movie, Jenkins shared, "Beyoncé is this larger-than-life figure, but when she's working with her daughter, when she's in the room with her daughter, she's a mom first.”

"So much of that energy bled into the film.” Jenkins continued, noting that their relationship helped form the relationship between the two characters. "I think for them, too, they just approached it that they both wanted to perform and do the best they could. And yet, they didn't have to pretend very much because they really are mother and daughter.”

Mufasa: The Lion King is set to open in theaters on December 20th, 2024. Check out the first trailer below.
