NYPD Enforcing Laws Against Trucks Parking Overnight on Staten Island's Father Capodanno Boulevard

    2024-04-30

Father Capodanno Boulevard, one of the most trafficked roadways on Staten Island, is the target of the newest NYPD enforcement action as part of an ongoing citywide campaign against illegally parked vehicles.

According to a department spokesperson, on Wednesday, April 24, officers were patrolling the boulevard between Seaview and Greeley Avenues. They booted seven unlawfully parked trucks and issued three summonses for undisclosed amounts.

Most areas in the five boroughs prohibit commercial parkig from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Despite recent federal laws, truckers have long sought out quiet areas in the city to park their rigs, wait for their scheduled delivery times, or attempt to get some rest.

Borough President Vito Fossella commented, "Illegal tractor trailer parking continues to plague certain residential areas on Staten Island and disturb the quality of life for residents. We often receive constituent complaints about tractor trailers parking where they should not be. We have closely followed the situation for the last two years, and work frequently with the NYPD’s Traffic Enforcement Division to address these complaints."

In August, 2022, Mayor Eric Adams announced "Operation Heavy Duty," a stepped- up enforcement campaign against unauthorized truck parking.

While pointing to locations like the South Brooklyn Marine Terminal and Brooklyn Navy Yard as potential better possibilities for truckers, the mayor stated that in the interim, trucks would not be permitted to turn residential city streets into parking lots.
