AB 2999 Introduced to Push Schools to Give Less Homework

    2024-05-01

California is in the news again. A legislator introduced AB 2999 to reduce the amount of homework a teacher can give in class. The bill would ban homework that is believed to be excessive.

Regardless of whether guidelines are in place, if more practice is needed to master a skill, a teacher can give more practice. More practice means more homework. Since the goal is to be proficient in a standard, like any skill, the amount of practice differs from student to student.

The teacher can't give 24 different lesson plans for each student because there isn't enough time in the day to grade and individualize lesson plans for each student. Instead, teachers create one lesson and homework set for the class to complete.

Every school district's goal is to have students master the common core standard that the district has in place. The bill can have a lasting impression on the students that will last into their adult lives. To recap, here are the bills California has introduced so far.

    • $20 minimum wage law (Law; effective on April 1, 2024)
    • AB 2751: No work after work hours (Bill introduced so workers don't have to listen to their boss after work hours)
    • AB 2999: No excessive homework (Bill introduced to limit homework given to students)

To summarize, California lawmakers want to reduce work hours for workers, increase the minimum wage for fast-food workers, decrease homework for the children of parents who had their pay increased, and increase the ability of the workers to say, "Don't call me after work hours?"

    Final Thoughts

    • "Don't call me after work."
    • "We want more pay."
    • "We want less homework in school."

Does that summarize what California is trying to do to its state?

Half the country is made up of blue states, and half is made up of red states.

If California passes the proposed bill, a few blue states will join in and change their states to reflect California.
