Whisky Magazine reported on April 9 that Glenmorangie unveiled a new whisky, Glenmorangie Triple Cask Reserve. The final blend is composed of whiskies that were aged in a mixture of bourbon, new charred oak and rye whisky casks, which are rarely used in scotch production. The Spirits Business reported that Glenmorangie claims the use of bourbon casks adds fruity qualities, the new charred oak adds greater depth to the final scotch, and the use of rye casks adds a bit of spice.
"Using bourbon and new charred oak, we celebrate our whisky's classic, fruity sweetness," Glenmorangie Master Blender Gillian Macdonald said, according to Whisky Magazine. "Laced with the savory notes and subtle spice of rye whiskey casks - seldom used at Glenmorangie - this whisky brings a new balance of flavors to our core range."
Glenmorangie says the whisky has tropical fruit aromas with "candied orange peel" and other citrus fruit. The palate is creamy with fudgy notes and flavors of marzipan and spice. The whisky concludes richly sweet and is heavily structured. This whisky follows Glenmorangie's March release of a 25-year-old whisky finished in Pommard wine casks. Pommard is a type of clone that produces Pinot Noir wine and is also the name of a village in Burgundy known for making Pinot Noir. Glenmorangie's director of whisky creation, Dr. Bill Lumsden, has a fondness for Burgundian wines from Pommard. As for the latest release, which hosts an ABV of 40% and a suggested retail price of £33 ($41), Macdonald claims it was "inspired by the Highlands' natural splendor." [botmc-promo]
