CHERRY—The Cherry softball team played a solid offensive and defensive game on Tuesday afternoon against Mesabi East.

That, along with a big inning, allowed them to pick up a 6-2 win.

“We really did things well on both sides,” Tigers head coach Darell Bjerklie said. “We fielded that ball well and came up with a couple of big hits.”

Both teams had solid pitchers on the mound.

The Giants grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning when Livia Takanen hit a double into the left field gap.

She went to third when Grace Paul grounded out and came in to score on a wild pitch.

“It was good to get that first run,” Mesabi East head coach Matt Zimmer said.

The Tigers tied the game up in the bottom of the third when with two outs, Anna Serna singled, stole second base, and went to third on a wild pitch.

She came in to score when Kaelyn Greenley hit a RBI single to tie the game at 1-1.

Cherry scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Lydia Greenly hit a single and went to second on a wild pitch.

Faith Zganjar then singled and sent Greenley to third.

Aimee Grotberg hit an RBI single to knock in Greenly.

    They weren’t done yet.

Emma Peterson grounded out and knocked in a run to make it a 4-1 Cherry lead.

The Tigers added to their lead in the bottom of the fifth inning when Serna walked, stole second, and came in to score when Kaelyn Greenly doubled.

Mesabi East picked up a run in the top of the sixth when Greta Levelwind blasted a triple to the right field fence.

She came in to score when Reese Heikkila grounded out.

The Tigers were able to load the bases in the bottom of the sixth with two outs.

Serna then came up and hit a RBI single to make it a 6-2 contest.

The Giants had the top of the seventh inning as their last chance to keep the game going.

With one out in the inning, Miikah Honkola came off the bench and ripped a double to right-center field.

But that would be as close as the Giants would get.

A strike out and a fly out ended the game.

“We had our chances,” Zimmer said. “We just didn’t come up with the big hit.”

Bjerklie really liked the way his squad played on defense in the contest.

“I think we only had one error and that is not how we have been playing,” Bjerklie said. “This was a nice game for us.”

Mesabi East is back in action on Thursday, when they host Chisholm.

Bella Grotberg picked up the win for the Tigers on the mound, going seven innings giving up two runs, six hits, striking out seven and walking just three.

Cherry is at Mountain Iron-Buhl on Thursday.
