(Photo by Joel Priest/Telluride Daily Planet)</figcaption></figure>With sophomore Austin Cook winning two individual races, senior Sage Gianola one and sophomore Lana Kenworthy still another, Telluride’s girls piled up 107 points at the 2024 San Juan Basin League Track &amp; Field Championships and placed second in the final standings Tuesday evening, April 30, at Ignacio H.S.Totaling 145 points, Mancos ultimately won the team title with the hosting Lady Bobcats (106) coming in third at the sun-soaked, seven-team meet. On the boys’ side, IHS overwhelmed runner-up Dove Creek 163-78, with THS (70) finishing third.Cook captured the 800- and 1,600-meter runs in 2:36.53 and 5:55.10, respectively, while Gianola won the 400-meters in 1:02.41 and Kenworthy (second place in the 400 by 0.07) the 200 in 27.23. Gianola also scored runner-up status in the 100 meters, clocking 13.59 seconds and placing one-tenth of a tick behind MHS’ Brooke Jabour.Kaila Rebolledo Unda further aided the cause with her second-place 18.71 in the 100m hurdles, and the Lady Miners’ 1,600-meter and 3,200-meter relays each finished first. The former, comprised of Gianola, Cook, freshman Ruby Cieciuch and Kenworthy, clocked 4:31.48 and defeated second-place Dolores by 21.19 seconds. At double the distance, the same personnel laid down a 10:57.59 which dusted runner-up DHS’ 11:23.64.Made up of seniors Zsofia Paluska, Katie Cahalane, Jayden Fortner and junior Ivy Morton, Telluride’s 800m relay earned second-place points; their time of 2:07.60 trailed only Ignacio’s 2:00.51.For the boys, junior Sean McKillop won the 3,200 and took second in the 1,600. His 11:56.73 in the former beat IHS freshman Thunder Windy Boy by nearly 15 seconds, while his 5:10.80 in the latter was about 15 ticks slower than IHS freshman Cayson Burcham’s 4:55.32.THS’ 4x400 relay (senior Joe Galbo, freshman Thomas Mahoney, senior Mateo Bubolo, senior Jaden Lopez) posted a victorious 3:40.79 — almost 17 seconds quicker than the quartet’s seeding time — and defeated Dolores by nearly two seconds. The Miners’ 4x8 (Lopez, freshman Gunnar Drew, freshman Elijah Prince, McKillop) placed second with a 9:39.67, and Bubolo earned second in the long jump. His 19’5” maximum ended up trailing only Ouray senior Roman Sackman’s 21’2” best.Lopez placed third in both the triple jump (35’11.25”) and 400 meters (54.37), Galbo was awarded third in the long jump after needing more tries to equal Bubolo’s 19’5” and the 4x2 relay (freshman Dylan Klapper, junior Lucas Vatter-Paez, junior Ruben Silverio, Mahoney) snatched up more third-place points with a time of 1:47.40 trailing Dove Creek’s winning 1:41.71. Mahoney was fourth in the 100 (11.75).Beginning the 2024 season’s final month, THS will next venture to Pagosa Springs on Saturday, May 4, for the Pirates’ Terry Alley Invitational, then travel to Grand Junction for the May 10-11 Dennis Teeters Tiger Invitational.BOYS’ LAX LOCKS UP LEAGUEDenied by weather a long-anticipated, rescheduled showdown with Erie this past weekend up in the Metro Area, Telluride’s boys’ lacrosse team still made the most out of its road trip and defeated Broomfield Holy Family 14-9.Scoring four goals in the non-league game, freshman prospect Marty White powered the mighty Miners to their 11th consecutive win.Senior Cash Livermore netted three goals and assisted on two others, and senior Lucas Betz totaled a team-high six points (goal, five assists). Sophomore Langston Silbergeld logged a goal and three assists, and junior Bernz Kurtz chipped in two goals as THS improved to 11-0 overall while remaining a first-place (clinched, via no less than a game over runner-up Grand Junction) 9-0 in the 4A Mountain. Part of the EHS-paced 4A Northern, HFHS slipped to 8-5 overall.Poised to polish off an epic regular season, Telluride — which rose one spot to No. 5 in CHSAA’s 4/29 Class 4A rankings — will next host Fruita Monument on Friday, May 3. Slated to welcome Montrose on the 1st, the Wildcats (4-8 overall, 4-3 Mountain as of May 1; the Red Hawks were 1-10, 1-8) fell 15-4 to THS back on March 30.SOCCER SEEKING STRONG FINISHRecipient of two forfeit wins on Tuesday, April 30, courtesy undermanned Ignacio, the Lady Miners went into their final two regular-season soccer matches hoping to have learned from a 9-1 home loss on the 29th to 4A Durango. THS stood 5-6-1 overall and 3-2-0 in 2A Intermountain-South action prior to a May 2 trip to Ridgway, with the Lady Demons (7-5-0, 2-3-0) plenty fired up for the contest after booking a 4/30 home win over 3A Bayfield, 3 to 1.Telluride will then host Del Norte (1-11-0, 0-3-0), reeling from a 4/30 trip to — and 10-0 loss at — 3A Pagosa Springs, on Saturday, May 4.Seniors Fortner, Brooke Duncan, Bianca Schillaci, Avery Ireland, Ryann Singer and Eliza Brown were all saluted at Judy Long Memorial Field prior to kickoff against DHS — the Lady Miners’ Senior Day celebration had been planned to precede the IHS doubleheader —and Duncan denied Durango the satisfaction of a shutout by nailing a 74th-minute free kick taken roughly 25 yards away from goal.</div></body>
