Chris Pine is “stunned” that Patty Jenkins Wonder Woman 3 isn’t happening.

Speaking with Business Insider , per Variety , Pine said he doesn’t understand why Warner Bros. decided not to move forward with a third Gal Gadot -starring Wonder Woman movie.

“I’m stunned that they said no to a billion-dollar franchise and decided to pivot elsewhere,” Pine said. “I don’t know what the reasoning was behind that; it’s above my pay grade, but Wonder Woman is an incredible character; Patty is such a thoughtful director.”

Would Chris Pine have returned as Steve Trevor in Wonder Woman 3?

Pine did say, however, that Steve Trevor likely wouldn’t have returned in Wonder Woman 3, had the movie not been canceled.

“Homie is dead. Steve is gonzo,” Pine commented. “It would be ridiculous to try to bring me back.”

Pine played Steve Trevor in 2017’s Wonder Woman and 2020’s Wonder Woman 1984, both of which were directed by Jenkins, starred Gadot as the titular superhero, and part of the now-defunct DCEU .

Speaking as to why he wanted to play Steve Trevor in the Wonder Woman franchise, Pine said, “I had no interest in playing the boyfriend, and it sounded like second fiddle. Then, in talking to Patty, the way she described it was, ‘Forget the superhero of it all, this is a romance, this is ‘Casablanca,’ that’s the movie I want to make.’ I was like, oh, now that is very cool because when have you seen a superhero film that was a love story, ultimately? That had nothing to do with blowing shit up.”

A third Wonder Woman movie was greenlit in December 2020; however, it was later canceled after James Gunn and Peter Safran took over DC Studios and announced a new, rebooted DCU that begins later this year with Creature Commandos.

While Gunn and Safran are planning a Paradise Lost series — which is described as a political drama set on Themyscira — there’s been no word as of yet regarding who will play Wonder Woman in the new DCU.
