    Earth Observation May Cut Emissions Equal To 476 Million Cars

    According to the World Economic Forum, EO could create an economy equivalent to the GDP of a medium-sized national country, such as Belgium, by the decade’s end. “Earth observation data can catapult global growth and eliminate up to 2 gigatonnes of emissions per year – equivalent to the annual emissions of 476 million gasoline-powered cars.”

    The study “Amplifying the Global Value of Earth Observation” was published in collaboration with Deloitte. The economic value created will be mainly from the agriculture, mining, oil and gas, government, electricity, supply chain and transport, insurance, and financial services sectors. Jeremy Jurgens, Managing Director and Head of the Centre for the Fourth Industrial Revolution at the World Economic Forum, commented, “Earth observation is a vital component of the Fourth Industrial Revolution.”

    Among the examples given was crop yields. Improved use of water and fertilizers should lower greenhouse gas emissions.

    Despite the opportunities, realizing the goal may take time or be unsuccessful. Among the hurdles are limited awareness of earth observation applications, a shortage of specialized talent, fragmented standards, and difficulty navigating the complicated earth observation marketplace.
