Elderly Man Killed, Several Injured in Morning Bus Crash

BROADWAY, Va. – Virginia State Police are investigating a Rockingham County crash that left one man dead.

According to an emailed media release from VSP Sergeant Brent W. Coffey, the incident occurred Thursday, May 2 on Brocks Gap Road (Route 259) near Fawley Lane (Route 938).

At approximately 9:54 a.m.,a 2009 Chevrolet Impala was traveling east on Route 259 when it rear-ended a 2015 Ford E350 bus, which was stopped for another eastbound vehicle making a turn.

The driver of the Chevrolet, Thomas L. Breighner, 86, of Timberville, died at the scene. He was wearing a seatbelt.

The driver of the Ford, a 33-year-old female from Old Fields, WV., suffered minor injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. She was wearing a seatbelt.

Five adult passengers in the Ford suffered minor injuries and were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. All five passengers were wearing seatbelts.

Virginia State Police provide statewide law enforcement services and work in conjunction with local law enforcement and criminal justice agencies. In major crash scenes and/or crash scenes involving fatalities, the VSP Accident Reconstruction Team assists troopers with incident investigation and documentation.

The crash remains under investigation.
