During the Roaring Twenties of the last century, President Calvin Coolidge led with dignity. He is well-known for his quiet demeanor and impeccable wit.

“Silent Cal” knew how to make a moment land. He invited some friends from his hometown to tour the White House once. They were all intimidated by the high society of the nation’s capital, so they committed to taking their cues from the president.

At dinner, they followed his every movement. When it was time for coffee, they recognized the president pouring it into his saucer. They each followed suit. He then mixed milk and sugar. So did they. After realizing their solidarity, he placed his saucer on the floor and called for the cat.

Are you following someone? Are there rooms you want to fit into so much that you mirror what everyone else is doing? You may catch yourself humiliated because you followed the wrong leader. You must watch for whom you are walking.

In Ephesians 5:1, Paul tells us to imitate God. “Be imitators of God,” he writes. He describes imitation as walking in love and giving.

At His very core, God is a giver. He has no concept of taking because there is no way to take anything from Him. We are rich due to His mercy and grace, so we can imitate God almighty.

Paul describes how people who walk in love keep their physical appetites and words in check. In so doing, they begin to walk not only in love but also light. As we walk in light, everything is illuminated because of it. To walk in light is to abandon darkness. And the effects of light are very noticeable.

Light reveals. Proverbs 4:18 says that a righteous person’s path is like walking toward the sunrise. As we near the sun, not only do we see it better; we also see everything else clearer. To leave the darkness is to decide that light is the only option, and we are not going to play with the children of the dark. Light reveals the truth. Light illuminates all that needs to be seen to live in wisdom.

Secondly, light heats. And in that heat, light makes things grow. The sun is the greatest energy producer for the earth, and it grows vegetation worldwide because plants can convert its energy into life.

When God shines His favor on your life, you can be sure things will grow. As things heat up in your life, there will be an output of love, joy, peace, patience and the like. Let the light of God shine on you and grow great things from you.

Lastly, light exposes darkness. Darkness sprints away from the light. Actually, light chases darkness away. Have you ever considered the fact that there is the speed of light but not the speed of darkness?

Darkness reveals nothing, produces nothing and has no measurable qualities. It’s simply the absence of light. Where there is no light, there is no life, enlightenment or vulnerability.

That last one may need more explanation. Exposure to light may reveal problems that hide nicely in the night. Also, too much exposure to sunlight can leave a sunburn. That does not mean the light is evil; it just reveals material that can’t withstand its power.

Trust me, when you decide to enter this world as an agent of light, you will be exposed to forces that hate you. You will shine, and they will attack you. Shine even more!

Turn the light on in your life. Today, confess anything hidden, obey the Spirit of God, and shine bright in a dark world. We need to see it!
