On Tuesday, Wilkes County Commissioner Stoney Greene turned in his resignation to County Attorney Tony Triplett. Triplett said Greene’s resignation letter was to be effective as of 4:59 p.m. Tuesday, ahead of the evening’s scheduled board meeting.

Greene was asked by fellow board members to resign in a motion made during the board’s April meeting. At that time, he declined to do so and voted the single opposing vote to the motion. At the March meeting of the Wilkes Board of Commissioners, Greene resigned from his position as chairman after being outed by an animal rights group for prior charges related to dogfighting in 2002.

Greene told The Tribune in March that he resigned as chairman because he didn’t “want to distract from the good things going on in the county.”

“It had nothing to do with any kind of guilt or anything like that,” he said. “The people that have come after me are the same ones that think abortion is okay and don’t believe in God.”

“They’ve been after me ever since we passed the Christian proclamation,” added Greene, referring to a proclamation approved by the board in December of 2023 that states, in part, “The Wilkes County Board of Commissioners proclaim and recognize our Christian Heritage and urge all citizens to proclaim Christianity’s important influence in the foundation and life in our county, state and nation.”

Greene’s resignation comes after charges are filed against him for assault on a female and domestic criminal trespassing. Greene turned himself in on April 29 at the Wilkes County Magistrates office on those two private party warrants and was subsequently released on a $1500 unsecure bond, according to the Wilkes County Sheriff’s Office.
