OPINION: Term limit measures are good for Wilsonville

The current term limit language is vague, when it comes to “what is the definition of a year.”

We all know a year is 365 days — we are taught that in elementary school! Our current term limit language states that two weeks or four months can be a year. That is not what the voters could have wanted.

I agree with term limits, let’s have some fresh ideas and actions every few years.

To be on council, or a mayor, is a steep learning curve. It takes a while to make connections, and learn the laws and regulations of our city.

Measure 3-608 allows appointments of less than one year to not count as a full year in a four year term.

Measure 3-609 allows anyone who served two terms on City Council to serve two terms as mayor.

What a gift to have a mayor who has that much background! Being mayor is a difficult job, forming new relationships with our neighbors. That person also deals with statewide and federal legislation which affects Wilsonville. They need to be able to pass that information onto City Council, so there can be effective discussions and decisions made.

A very experienced mayor serves all of Wilsonville.

I urge you to please vote yes on Measure 3-608 AND Measure 3-609.
