(COLORADO) — The Colorado State Patrol (CSP) is sending a message to anyone thinking about driving under the influence this weekend. Saturation patrols will be conducted from Friday, May 10, through Sunday, May 12, throughout Pueblo and Fremont counties, CSP said.

A saturation patrol is when a large number of officers concentrate in a small area to achieve a specific goal—in this case, to lower the percentage of deaths by impaired driving. The upcoming patrols will focus specifically on major traffic arteries in both counties and also feeder roads.

According to CSP, over the past five years, there have been 62 fatal crashes in Pueblo and Fremont counties, and 168 crashes where occupants sustained serious bodily injury. Most of those incidents occurred on Monday and Saturday afternoons. The leading cause of those crashes is impaired driving.

CSP’s mission is to stop this reckless behavior in its tracks and save as many lives as possible.

During the saturation patrol, state troopers will be dedicated to detecting and apprehending any driver impaired by or under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or both. Excessive speed will also be checked, and troopers will not tolerate driving over the limit, both in terms of speed and substances.

From CSP: If you encounter a suspected impaired driver, the driver should be avoided by getting out of the way. Contact CSP after you pull over by calling *CSP (277), 9-1-1, or 719-589-5807. Be prepared to provide the following information: vehicle description, license plate number, location and direction of travel, driver description, and the driving behavior being demonstrated. All emergency calls can be made to 9-1-1.
