(WYTV) — Essential oils, melatonin and sound machines are things you can use to help you fall asleep, but do any of them actually work?

A sleep psychologist says there’s nothing wrong with trying different sleep products, but it’s important to understand there’s no perfect recipe.

So what about that sound machine?

“At the very best of what they do is they create good wind-down routines,” Cleveland Clinic Dr. Alicia Roth said. “So, that is a key to falling asleep quickly, staying asleep, having a good restful night of sleep.”

The more effort you put into finding the right sleep products, the more stress you’re going to put on yourself.

Instead, have a quiet routine that starts about an hour before bed, one that helps relax your body and your mind. Maybe that’s reading or watching an old television show. It’s important not to do anything really stimulating.

And when it comes to melatonin, talk to your doctor. You don’t want to take a supplement that might react to a medical condition or any medications you might be taking.
