Nearly 100 eighth-grade students at R.B. Hudson Steam Academy built hydrogen cars taught by Hyundai Motor America (HMA) officials on May 2 in the school’s new gymnasium.

HMA partnered with Horizon Educational to provide hydrogen fuel cell workshops to R.B. Hudson students. HMA officials also discussed electric and hydrogen vehicles that will be available soon.

Dr. Ken Hamilton, R.B. Hudson’s principal,  said the model car building project was a great learning tool for the students entering high school next year.

“This was a great event for the students that will benefit them in the future,” Hamilton said. “I’m happy the students can learn something and represent R.B. Hudson.”

Scott Posey, who works in communications at Hyundai, said the project was something for the kids to enjoy and learn.

“We’re excited that HMA gave us the opportunity to hold one of these in Selma. They are a fun way to not only teach students about clean mobility technologies but other STEM skillsets as well,” Posey said.

After students built the cars, they did a test ride.
