NEWBERRY — Newberry’s late inning rally was not enough as they suffer a tough home loss against Batesburg-Leesville on Wednesday evening. The Bulldogs(9-14-1, 2-7 region 2-AA) lose 13-11 to the Panthers(11-3, 3-1 region 3-AA) in their last home game of the 2024 season.

Newberry got off to an excellent start and held a 2-1 lead going into the fourth inning, but things start to a take turn for the worst for the home team.

The Panthers were able to get the bases loaded and then get on the board after Adam Riefsnyder, who got the start for the Bulldogs, walked his second batter of the inning. Things kept gettign worst for him as he hit the next batter with a bad pitch and it gave the visitors a 3-2 lead.

Batesburg-Leesville would add two more runs to the scoreboard before Riefsnyder was replaced with Will Satterwhite. The Bulldogs finally were able to get out of the fourth inning after the pitching change, but now trailed 5-2.

The visitors continued their hot hitting and base running by adding five more runs at the top of the fifth inning which forced another pitching change by the Bulldogs’ coaching staff. Newberry was able to cut into the lead by adding one run at the bottom of the fifth inning. They still trailed 10-3 going into the sixth inning. The home team added two more runs in the sixth inning, but still gave up three more runs in the inning.

The Bulldogs trailed 13-5 going into the bottom half of the seventh inning. They were able to get a few base runners aboard after taking advantage of some bad pitching themselves before a RBI double help bring home one run. Then, Newberry was able to load the bases on a few walks that brought home two more runs.

Tymone Abrams almost cleared the bases with a two out double that out three more runs on the board. Unfortunately, the Bulldogs eight seven runs scored was not enough and they suffered their final out of the game.

Newberry bounced back to beat Irmo 1-0 on Friday night to conclude their regular season on the road.
