    YMCA offers martial arts program

    2024-05-09

Katu Vuur martial arts classes are now being offered at the Stokes Family YMCA. Combining over 50 years of experience in martial arts, Grandmaster Brian Cartrette developed and is the head, Soke, of Katu Vuur, a system certified by the International Independent Martial Arts Association.

Classes are held every Tuesday and Thursday from 6 to 7 p.m. and Saturday from 10 to 11 a.m.

Katu Vuur incorporates kicking, punching, trapping, stand-up grappling and ground fighting. It uses the concepts of Bruce Lee’s Jeet Kune Do, tactics of the Joe Lewis American Karate Systems, Western Boxing, Northern and Southern styles of Kung Fu and multiple ground fighting arts.

“Using the techniques and principles taught students can strengthen their confidence and discipline, and improve their emotional maturity, self-esteem and self-defense tactics,” shared Grandmaster and Soke Cartrette.

The system is designed to help individuals defend themselves against someone larger than them, for close quarter combat and realistic altercations defending against trained and untrained fighters.

Techniques focus on footwork, angles and mobility on the ground, with movement being key in students avoiding attacks and landing hits while standing or on the ground. Ground fighting, including rolls, mobility, falls and escapes, are also taught.

Katu Vuur is for ages 13 and up. Workout clothing and tennis shoes should be worn, with the exception of wearing hoodies while grappling. All necessary equipment is provided. Prices vary for members, potential members and households, and financial assistance is available.

To attend a single class, there is a $15 one-time drop in fee.

First responders (law enforcement, fire fighters and emergency medical) get the first month free and a 20% discount per month off of the single membership rate each month thereafter.

Register online or in person at the Stokes Family YMCA welcome desk. Visit Katuvuur.com for more information.
