A packed house greeted Vice President Kamala Harris on Thursday at Enmarket Arena in Savannah. Lines formed hours before the 5 p.m. speech by the Democratic presidential candidate and parking lots and adjacent streets were jammed. Buses and trolleys brought loads from city parking lots about a mile away to the campaign rally that ended a two-day tour by Harris. The Lowcountry is home to lots of history and culture, and some of it is disappearing today. Praise houses were first established in the Lowcountry sea islands on St. Helena Island’s many plantations as places to meet and worship. Since there were few formal church buildings on St. Helena Island, most of the island’s slave inhabitants could only walk or ride to the main church on Sunday mornings, if at all.

During my childhood, when my family visited relatives “across the river,” in Bayou Plaquemine, Bayou Goula, Caddo, the Pointe, and White Castle, my siblings and I would sometimes race up and down the levees, some distance away from the cows grazing there. At the summit of the hill, you could see the Mississippi River waters through stands of trees and brush. It never occurred to me that our “playground” was the living testimony of Black men, prisoners of the Louisiana State Penitentiary at Angola whom the state of Louisiana had re-enslaved in the convict leasing system.
