Jacob Weese</figcaption></figure>THRALL – Lake Belton noisemakers and a sea of red in the stands seemingly rattled the College Station softball team early as the Lady Cougars fell 6-0 in the first game of their best-of-three regional quarterfinal series on Thursday at Tigerette Softball Field.After going down in order in the top of the first, 10th-ranked College Station gave up five runs as second-ranked Lake Belton batted through its lineup.“I was just telling the kids probably about as bad as you can start offensively in the first inning and about as bad as you can start defensively in the first inning,” College Station head coach Vinnie Carreon said. “Just you know a little bit on our heels starting out, crowd was loud, team was loud, looked a little bit shellshocked and it took us an inning to kind of settle in. But once we did it was too late, their kid threw a good game and offensively, we just didn’t do much at the plate.”<h2>People are also reading…</h2>Even on the first at-bat and first out of the inning, College Station seemed antsy as a throw to first on a grounder sailed toward Lake Belton’s dugout before being picked up the Lady Cougars. College Station was then able to nab Victoria Shimabukuro trying to slide into second.The next three batters fared much better as a walk, hit by pitch and an RBI single by Casey Schultz got them on the board. Her RBI single was the first of three in a row as a groundout and a single made it 3-0.Two more runs came into score on a fielding error in left field two batters later, before No. 9 hitter Madison Perkins struck out to end the inning.Lake Belton (36-3) added just one more run in the third, courtesy of an RBI double by Haley Hoffman.College Station starter Gracie Ream gave up six hits, six runs, four earned, struck out five, hit one batter and walked another in five innings. Her day was done after 68 pitches as Samone Clark finished the game.One run was all Lake Belton needed though as College Station had just one hit against Tarleton State signee Shelby Schultz. The senior’s lone base runner allowed was Shaenyn Yates in the second off a single.On 69 pitches, Shelby also struck out five with no walks.“[She] moved the ball around a little bit on us,” Carreon said. “We struck out five times which you like to keep it at five and under so that wasn’t terrible. She had a lot of weak contact from us today. We didn’t hit the ball hard [often] maybe once or twice. She threw the ball well. We didn’t make good adjustments at the plate. We got to find a way to have a better plan tomorrow and stick to that plan and try and barrel some more balls up.”College Station (29-6) has to win Friday’s 6 p.m. game at Tigerette Softball Field to force a winner-take-all finale. If the third game is needed, the two teams will be at Tigerette Softball Field at noon on Saturday.“Let’s just flush this one and come back tomorrow and be ready to go play ball,” Carreon said. “We’re going to be used to the noise and all the stuff. I mean this is a great atmosphere, right? It’s kind of been a long time since we’ve been in this kind of atmosphere but now, they’re used to it. So, they’re going to come out tomorrow, have a better approach and get after it and be ready to go.”</div></body>
