Huge Solar Storms May Damage US Grid Tomorrow

Most stains on the electricity grid in the US are due to an ancient structure that cannot handle peak needs, mostly in the hot summer months. Tomorrow, there may be a new and more severe problem. This is large solar storms on the Sun.

According to a bulletin, “NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) — a division of the National Weather Service — is monitoring the sun following a series of solar flares and coronal mass ejections (CMEs) that began on May 8.”

Grid Threat

Additionally, “Geomagnetic storms can impact infrastructure in near-Earth orbit and on Earth’s surface, potentially disrupting communications, the electric power grid, navigation, radio and satellite operations.”

The worry about grid capacity has been a concern for some time. These solar storms could cause blackouts. The agency said grid operators should take “protective measures.” That is, almost certainly impossible.
