Months of organization paid off on Sunday, May 5, as White Bird Appaloosa Horse Rescue held a benefit bingo event. The standing room only crowd helped the rescue raise funds, which will go to taking care of the multiple horses on site.

“What an amazing day,” Jorg and Tom Mayfield said in a statement posted to their group’s Facebook page. “It was standing room only at the White Bird Appaloosa Horse Rescue Benefit Bingo event. We are deeply grateful for the many individual donors and sponsors who contributed such fantastic prizes.”

If horses need help in Lunenburg or the surrounding area, if they’ve been abandoned, beaten or in general need to recover, there’s one place to do it. And that’s White Bird. Their mission is to rescue and rehabilitate abused, neglected and at-risk horses. This includes senior horses, blind horses, and horses with medical conditions that require special diets and medicines.

The Mayfields chose the name for their sanctuary based on the Appaloosa horses, a beautiful breed known for skill, beauty, and endurance that has long been protected by Native Americans. When settlers invaded the Palouse river region, Chief White Bird led the horses and tribe members to safety. White Bird Appaloosa is an homage to the fighting and persevering spirit of Chief White Bird and the Appaloosa horses.
