What Should Utah NHL Be Called?

    By JT Howland,

    2024-05-11

The NHL is officially relocating to Utah. With the Arizona Coyotes moving to the Midwest, it is time to speculate on what the team could be called. Eight trademarks were recently filed, so some excellent name options and some uninspiring choices exist. I'll rank the eight in order of which names should be chosen and which should be left aside.

*While these were trademarked, the team's official name is not guaranteed to come from this list.

**This list is all in good fun so please do not get upset over any disagreements.

    1. Utah Yeti

The Utah Yeti(s) would be the best choice out of the eight trademark names to be chosen for the NHL's Utah hockey team. There would be so many options for a logo choice, which, if done right, could be one of the best in the league. The uniforms could be unique, and the team could experiment with a purple and blue color scheme like that of the Utah Jazz . There are so many possibilities!

    2. Utah Blizzard

A blizzard-themed sports team would be unique. There could be a big discussion about what the logo would look like, which could even feature a Yeti. I like the Utah Yeti(s) team name, but the Blizzard could also incorporate similar features. This Twitter/X jersey concept would be incredible on the ice.

    3. Utah Venom

There are a few snake-themed sports teams, but the Utah Venom would be an excellent name for the newest NHL team. Salt Lake City is known for hosting rattlesnakes, and the logo could be a fierce snake ready to attack like this Twitter/X concept.

    4. Utah Outlaws

There has not been an Outlaw-themed team since the United Hockey League's Kansas City Outlaws, who played one season in 2004-05. That team featured a red, gold, and white color scheme. Could Utah feature a similar design? Or could the team opt for this jersey concept? Either way is a good option.

    5. Utah Fury

I'm not a massive fan of the name Utah Fury, but I wouldn't be too upset with it. The Columbus Fury of the Pro Volleyball Federation has one of the best logos you'll see today in sports, and Utah could go in the same direction.

    6. Utah Mammoth

You won't go far to find another Mammoth-themed sports team, as the Colorado Mammoth plays in the National Lacrosse League. But as for hockey, I am a big fan of animals holding hockey sticks, like the logos of the OHL's Erie Otters and AHL's Rockford IceHogs, and I would approve of this concept.

    7. Utah Ice

This name doesn't make sense. As much as I love the icy-themed logo and jersey possibility, I don't like the name. Sure, the Brooklyn Nets made it work, but there are so many better options.

    8. Utah Hockey Club

I'll take all of the names above over Utah Hockey Club. One of my favorite things about hockey is each team's unique identity. I wouldn't be excited to watch a team in generic colors with Utah diagonally on it. I hope the NHL can give Utah a fun and exciting name before the season starts.

The Coyotes are moving to the Midwest?? Take a glance at a map. Utah is directly north of Arizona and west of Colorado. Clearly in the West.
