My journey through the automotive industry spans over 25 years, with a decade devoted to sales and service within the Acura brand. Reflecting on the early '90s, when Acura's lineup boasted iconic models like the Legend (RL), Integra (RSX), and Vigor (TL), I recall the excitement surrounding the brand's emergence in the luxury market. It was during this era that I made my first vehicle purchase — a vibrant blue 1990 Integra RS that sparked my lifelong passion for driving.

However, my connection to Acura took an unexpected turn when my personal story intersected with the brand. Through a serendipitous recommendation, my path crossed with my future wife, who was just looking for someone to maintain her 1998 Acura Integra (the first car she purchased) upon relocating to Georgia. Little did we know that this chance encounter would begin a shared journey fueled by our mutual love for Acura vehicles.

Fast forward to the present, and I find myself immersed in the latest chapter of Acura's evolution—the 2024 Acura TLX Type S. Drawing upon my deep-rooted history with the brand, I approach this review with a unique perspective, one that intertwines personal anecdotes with professional insights.

The TLX Type S represents a pinnacle of Acura's engineering prowess, blending performance, luxury, and cutting-edge technology into a compelling package that demands attention.

    Interior Features:
Step inside the TLX Type S, and you're greeted by a combination of sporty and luxury. Premium materials abound, from supple leather upholstery to metallic accents, creating an ambiance that satisfies the senses and differentiates it from traditional luxury sedans on the market. The cabin is an example of sophistication that meets technology, with every surface thoughtfully crafted to elevate the driving experience.

But it's not just about aesthetics; it's packed with advanced technology designed to enhance comfort, convenience, and connectivity. The centerpiece of the dashboard is the new 12.3-inch Precision Cockpit™ Digital Instrument Cluster, which offers crisp, high-resolution graphics and customizable displays to suit the driver's preferences. Paired with the 10.5-inch Head-Up Display (HUD) in the Type S variant, essential information is seamlessly integrated into the driver's line of sight, providing real-time updates without distraction.

Wireless Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™ compatibility and a wireless charging pad ensure that staying connected on the go is effortless. However, wireless charging is hit or miss during spirited driving. Rear-seat passengers aren't left out either, with the addition of two USB-C charging ports for convenience. Rear legroom is a bit cramped but not unbearable for adolescents and pre-teens.

However, not everything is perfect. The trackpad for the infotainment system is noted as outdated and cumbersome to use, detracting slightly from an otherwise stellar package.

    Exterior:
The exterior styling enhancements of the Type S exemplify a harmonious fusion of athleticism with sophistication. At first glance, the Type S has a commanding presence, with its sleek lines and aggressive stance capturing attention on the road. Inspired by the Type S Concept, the introduction of the new frameless Diamond Pentagon grille marks a bold departure from convention, signaling the model's performance pedigree. Complementing this distinctive front fascia are meticulously crafted body accents, including Type S-specific trim elements like the unique front splitter, side sills, and rear diffuser. These enhancements not only enhance the visual appeal of the TLX Type S but also contribute to its aerodynamic efficiency, ensuring a dynamic driving experience that is as exhilarating as it is refined.

It's important to note that Acura isn't positioning the TLX Type S to directly compete with the performance trim levels of German manufacturers like BMW's "M" or Mercedes' "AMG" series. Instead, it aims to offer a blend of sportiness and luxury that aligns more closely with models like the Cadillac CT-5, Mercedes E Class, BMW 5 Series, and Audi A6. This strategic positioning allows Acura to offer the TLX Type S at a fraction of the price of its German and domestic performance counterparts, making it a compelling choice for value-conscious buyers who don't want to look like they're shopping on a budget.

    Driving Dynamics:
While the interior may pamper occupants with luxury, the TLX Type S's driving dynamics are equally impressive. At the heart of the experience is the potent 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 engine, meticulously engineered to deliver 355 horsepower and 354 lb-ft of torque. This powerplant propels the TLX Type S with authority, delivering brisk acceleration and a satisfyingly responsive throttle.

But power is only part of the equation; the TLX Type S is engineered for precision and agility on the road. The sport-tuned suspension and precise steering combine to deliver an engaging and confidence-inspiring driving experience. Whether navigating tight corners or cruising on the highway, the TLX Type S feels composed and controlled, effortlessly blending athleticism with comfort.

The TLX offers a variety of drive modes tailored to meet diverse driving preferences and road conditions. These modes include Comfort, Normal, Sport, and the high-performance Sport + mode. Each mode offers distinct adjustments to throttle response, suspension firmness, and transmission mapping, allowing drivers to customize their driving experience accordingly. Engaging Sport + mode is straightforward, and once activated, Sport + unleashes the full potential of the TLX Type S, delivering sharper responses and enhanced dynamics for a thrilling driving experience. Whether cruising through city streets or tackling winding roads, the TLX Type S ensures optimal performance tailored to drivers' preferences.

Acura's Super Handling All-Wheel Drive™ (SH-AWD) system is integral to the TLX Type S's exceptional driving dynamics. Recognized for its ability to distribute power to each wheel independently, SH-AWD significantly enhances traction and stability across varied driving conditions. This rear-biased system can allocate up to 70% of torque to the rear axle, with the ability to send 100% of that torque to the outside rear wheel, enhancing traction and cornering stability in every driving scenario. Whether navigating challenging weather conditions or sharp corners, the TLX Type S remains poised and confident, thanks to SH-AWD's precision-engineered capabilities.

My firsthand experience with SH-AWD dates back to my tenure with Acura and the introduction of groundbreaking technology, where I had the opportunity to put it to the test in real-world scenarios. Driving my 2005 Acura RL demo through icy conditions in Georgia, I covered over 30 miles on untreated roads to ensure the dealership's opening. In those challenging conditions, SH-AWD showcased its impressive traction and stability, reaffirming its reputation as a cornerstone of Acura's commitment to safety and performance.

    Safety:
Acura prioritizes safety with an array of advanced features that set a new standard in the premium sedan class. Its ACE™ body structure and next-generation front passenger airbag technology form a robust safety foundation, ensuring enhanced protection for occupants during a collision. Additionally, the TLX comes equipped with the AcuraWatch™ suite of advanced safety and driver-assistive technologies as standard. For the 2024 model year, the TLX introduces further enhancements to its safety performance. These include expanded functions of the AcuraWatch™ suite, featuring a new front single-lens sensor camera with a broader field of view and a grille-mounted millimeter-wave radar with improved detection angles. These enhancements significantly improve collision prevention capabilities, allowing the TLX to better recognize objects and road boundaries and enhance overall safety on the road.

Braking performance is key for safety and control in a vehicle designed for exhilarating speeds and spirited driving. The TLX Type S, equipped with the Collision Mitigation Braking System™ (CMBS™) with Pedestrian Detection, offers an extra layer of protection by automatically applying the brakes to help avoid or mitigate collisions with vehicles or pedestrians. Our tester was outfitted with high-performance summer tires for enhanced braking capabilities, providing optimal grip and responsiveness. Additionally, the lightweight Copper-finish Y-spoke 20-inch wheels, reminiscent of those seen on the TLX Type S PMC Edition, contribute to improved handling and braking performance.

Complementing these features is a state-of-the-art brake-by-wire system, paired with 14.3-inch four-piston front Brembo brakes, ensuring precise and powerful braking performance, even under the most demanding driving conditions. With its advanced braking technology and high-performance components, the TLX Type S inspires confidence and control, allowing drivers to push the limits while maintaining safety and stability on the road.

Furthermore, the TLX incorporates a rear seatbelt reminder system, providing visual and audible cues to securely buckle rear seat occupants. With features like Collision Mitigation Braking System™ (CMBS™), Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Departure Warning, and Traffic Sign Recognition, the TLX offers comprehensive safety and peace of mind for drivers and passengers alike.

In conclusion, the 2024 Acura TLX Type S represents the family-friendly nature of its performance sedan lineup, combining luxurious appointments with thrilling driving dynamics. From its meticulously crafted interior to its exhilarating performance on the road, the TLX Type S is a testament to Acura's commitment to excellence. Whether carving up twisty mountain roads or cruising in comfort on the highway, the TLX Type S delivers a driving experience that is as rewarding as it is refined.
