The St. Anthony’s varsity boys soccer team was recognized at a Huntington Town Board meeting this week. The Friars won the state championship with a 19-5 record, including a 13-game win streak.
Physics Teacher Recognized
Northport High School physics teacher Greg Guido has been recognized for his
work as an educator by the Long Island STEM Education Leadership Association
(LISTEMELA).
Guido earned the organization’s STAR Award, which “was created to recognize teachers who serve as a beacon of light for our students.”
Now in his 37th year of teaching physics, he has taught Regents Physics, Conceptual Physics, Advanced Placement Physics, International Baccalaureate Physics HL, and
a specialized introductory course for English Language Learners. According to the science department chair, David Storch, he is “an outstanding educator, exhibiting
his capacity to develop and implement instructional experiences of the highest caliber at every level. He uses his intelligence and creativity to provide authentic and student-centered instructional designs resulting in phenomenal levels of engagement within a highly productive and supportive climate.”
Guido was recognized at an event hosted by LISTEMELA on May 3, where he
received the “STEM Star 2024” award.

Lifesaving Devices
The Commack School District has acquired LifeVac devices to protect students and staff in case of choking. Director of community relations Debbie Virga visited Commack North Little League to raise awareness of the life-saving device, which is now located in the league’s concession stand.
John Glenn at the Top
Elwood-John H. Glenn High School has again been named one of the top high
schools in the nation, as noted in the recently released 2024-2025 U.S. News and World Report annual “Best High Schools” list.
With an overall score of 93.7/100, John Glenn ranked at No. 1,112 nationally, 109th in New York State and in the top five in Suffolk County. Schools are ranked on their performance on state-required tests, graduation and how well they prepare students for college.
“I am happy to report that Elwood-John H. Glenn High School continues to rank
among the top high schools both at the national and state levels,” Principal Corey McNamara said. “This recognition is a collective effort of the entire Elwood community and organization. We commend our students, families, faculty and staff for their continuous effort in making Elwood such a great community to live.”
Harborfields Art Honors
Harborfields High School’s National Art Honor Society students displayed their
work at the 10th annual NAHS 6×6 Collaborative Art Installation, where a special installation themed “Home” brought together 11 school districts from Nassau and Suffolk Counties. Showcasing the artwork of student-artists from this year and the past decade, the 6×6 art was elegantly displayed on custom-designed cubes. The show ran from April 10-14 at the Heckscher Museum in Huntington. The cubes then went on display at the Firefly Artists Gallery in Northport.
Co-founded in 2014 by art teachers and NAHS advisers Jeanie Ritter of Harborfields and Rosemarie Elder of Plainview-Old Bethpage John F. Kennedy High School, the 6×6 project seeks to encourage NAHS students to connect, collaborate and create. Heckscher Museum Educational Director Joy Weiner provided the host location. Allyson Uttendorfer, NAHS adviser for Half Hollow Hills High School East, joined the project in 2015, with the three teachers serving ever since as 6×6 Collaborative coordinators.
Cold Spring Harbor App
Cold Spring Harbor High School seniors Buster Coden and Desmond Mehta and juniors Milan Lustig and Ryan Smith recently presented their Congressional App on water quality, met with US Rep. Nick LaLota, toured the
Capitol, attended panel discussions and presented their app to members of Congress.
They visited Washington, D.C. for the #HouseOfCode Science Fair and the new National Science Fair.
The team built an app that allows residents of Suffolk County to quickly check the water quality in their local bays, harbors and rivers. This app, which uses ReactJS and Leaflet, displays an interactive map with several points representing the United States Geological Survey water-monitoring sites across Suffolk County. Live data is then analyzed before an overall rating of the water quality at that location is displayed to the user.
Walt Whitman’s Best
The South Huntington School District has announced Angelina Liclican as valedictorian and Porter Chetty as salutatorian.
Angelina Liclican wants to study mechanical engineering. “I have always loved science and math, so I knew I wanted to do something in STEM,” said Angelina. “However, I knew I wanted to do engineering specifically because I love to build and create. Overall, there are endless possibilities in the field of mechanical engineering.”
Angelina is proud to be the Class of 2024 valedictorian. She was one of only 357 students in the world to score a rare perfect 5 on an AP exam (AP Research) in May of 2023. She is a College Board National Merit Commended Scholar, College Board AP Scholar with Distinction, AP Capstone Diploma Recipient, and Rensselaer Medalist.
In addition to being a member of the National Honor Society, Angelina has been inducted into the National Social Studies, Math, English, and World Language Honor Societies. She is Student Government Secretary, and a member of SADD and the Asian Heritage Club. And because Walt Whitman High School didn’t already have a club to help animals, Angelina created one. She is the founder and President of Rescue Paws which works with local animal shelters. She is also a volunteer youth teacher at Smithtown Gospel Tabernacle Sunday School. Angelina says her family and faith help ground her.
Porter Chetty also plans to major in engineering. “I just think I am really good at figuring stuff out, building things,” said Porter. “I pick up things really quickly. And I feel like engineering is something that aligns with my love for fixing things and, also, I’m really interested in the sciences.”
He’s also interested in the performing arts. While at Whitman his talents have been on display in school plays: The Crucible, Love of a Pig, and Don’t Drink the Water. He’s a member of the Collective Recording Studio Club and International Thespian Society. He’s been honored as a top music student in New York State by being chosen for NYSSMA All-State Choir and SCMEA All-County Chorus in Suffolk.
Sports and clubs also help balance the work. Porter is the captain of the Varsity Badminton team, and ran Cross Country for two years. He has been inducted into the National Honor Society as well as the World Language, English, Social Studies, and Tri-M Music Honor Societies.

Angelina’s work within our research program has truly defined her, not only as a stellar academic leader, but also as someone who focuses on real world issues and tries to find solutions. Porter Chetty is a dynamic and vibrant individual whose focus on the fine arts within high school has been something of note within our music programs as well as musicals, showcasing not only his own talents, but the talents of so many of his peers.”

Girl Scout Scholarships
The Girl Scouts of Suffolk County awarded its annual Past Presidents Scholarships to five young women planning on attending college in Fall 2024. Each Girl Scout received $500 to be used toward tuition or other expenses related to attending college. Among the winners was Lillian Clements, Troop 60100, Northport.
