    High School Roundup: Currituck baseball, Perquimans baseball, softball teams advance in playoffs, so does Camden softball

    BARCO — The Currituck High School Knights scored three times in both the third and fourth innings Saturday en route to a 7-2 home win over the Harnett Central Trojans in the second round of the 3A NCHSAA baseball state playoffs.

    Michael Sawyer led the No. 6-ranked Knights’ eight-hit attack with three, including a double. He also drove home two runs and scored one.

    Caleb Daniels had two hits and drove home a run while Braden Williams had two hits and scored a run.

    Gabe Taylor also had a hit and a run batted in. Will Brumsey and D. Espinoza also had an RBI each. Riley Anderson, Cayden Barth and Mason Burch all scored a run in the Knights’ victory over the 18th-ranked Trojans.

    The Knights, 20-5, will face the No. 4-ranked South Central Falcons in the next round of the playoffs on Tuesday.

    Perquimans 7, Rosewood 2GOLDSBORO — The Perquimans High School Pirates exploded for seven runs in the top half of the seventh inning and then shut the door on the Rosewood Eagles to win the teams’ second-round 1A NCHSAA baseball state playoff game 7-2.

    Rosewood scored two runs in the third and held the Pirates scoreless until the final frame.

    Will Rucker struck the Pirates’ biggest blow in the seventh, driving in two runs with a double. Ben Brown had two hits, driving in a run and scoring a run.

    Jacob Askew, Collin Roberts, Brady Shepherd each had a hit, knocked in a run and scored a run. Evan Conway also had a hit and knocked in a run. Sean Sanders also had a hit while Josh Smith, Cameron Goodrow and Maddux Thach all scored a run in the Pirates’ seventh inning.

    Thach went the distance to pick up the win. He gave up two runs, both earned, on five hits and three walks in seven innings of work. He also struck out seven Eagle hitters.

    The No. 3-ranked Pirates, 19-5, are scheduled to play the No. 4-ranked East Wake Academy Eagles, 15-4, at home on Tuesday.

    Softball

    CAMDEN — The No. 3-ranked Camden Bruins shut out the Ayden-Griffin Chargers 10-0 at home Friday in the second round of the 2A NCHSAA state softball playoffs.

    A. Anderson and Ellie Barker struck the biggest blows in the Bruins’ 11-hit attack. Anderson had two hits, including a home run, knocked in two runs and scored two. Barker also had two hits, including a triple, knocked in two runs and scored two.

    Carlyn Tanis also had two hits and scored two runs. Caleigh Martin, Ruby Arnette and Tessa Dodson each had a hit, knocked in a run and scored a run. Kaitlynn Barnes had a hit and a run batted in. Emma Young also had a hit.

    Tanis picked up the win in the run-ruled game after six innings. She scattered five hits, walked one and struck out one Charger hitter.

    The Bruins, 19-2, will play the No. 10-ranked South Columbus Stallions, 16-6, on Tuesday at home.

    Perquimans 8, East Bladen 1

    The No. 7-ranked Perquimans High School Pirates defeated the 18th-ranked East Bladen Eagles 8-1 at home Friday in the second round of the 1A NCHSAA state softball playoffs.

    E. Gregory and Kayden Hunter struck the biggest blows for the Pirates; both homered in the game. Gregory had two hits, drove in three and scored one. Hunter also scored a run and knocked in a run.

    Morgan Baccus also had a big game, slapping one of the Pirates’ four doubles. She also had a single, knocked in a run and scored three times.

    Lilly Winslow had a double and scored two runs. Indya Long had a double and knocked in a run. Bristyl Riddick also had a double. Heather Smith also had a hit and knocked in a run.

    A. Stallings pitched 3⅓ innings, giving up one hit and striking out three Eagle hitters. M. Stokley pitched 3⅔ innings, giving up an unearned run on four hits and one walk. She struck out five Eagle hitters.

    The Pirates, 20-8, will now play No. 5-ranked Northside-Pinetown, 17-4, on the road Tuesday.

    Dixon 6, Currituck 1

    HOLLY RIDGE — The Currituck County High School Knights were defeated 6-1 by the Dixon High School Bulldogs on Saturday in the second round of the 3A NCHSAA state softball playoffs.

    The No. 5-ranked Bulldogs held the No. 15-ranked Knights scoreless until the top of the seventh inning when Mimi Shields homered. Savannah Banks, who doubled, and K. Hassell had the only other hits for the Knights.

    Addy Romanczyk pitched six innings for the Knights, giving up six runs, only two earned. She scattered eight hits while walking two and striking out six Bulldog hitters.

    Soccer

    The J.A. Holmes High School girls soccer team blanked No. 24-ranked Cape Hatteras 8-0 Thursday in a non-conference game for both clubs.

    The Aces scored six goals in the first half and two in the second. Emma Parrish led the way with two goals and two assists. Ellie Spear also had two goals and one assist.

    Kate Foster scored a goal and had two assists, while L. Carpiette had a goal and an assist. Janaya Perry and Amaris Oliver each scored a goal while Morgan Harrell had an assist.

    Aces’ goalkeeper Ava Bunch had three saves on three shots on goal. She also had a save on a penalty kick.

    Currituck 1, First Flight 0

    The Currituck High School Knights girls soccer team defeated the First Flight Nighthawks 1-0 in road conference game Wednesday.

    S. Merritt scored the game’s only goal in the second half. Goalkeeper Grace Walls had five saves on five shots on goal.

    The Knights also shut out the Griffins of the Northeast Academy for Aerospace and Advanced Technologies 9-0 in a non-conference home game on Thursday.

    Abigail Smith and Lisa Phillips had two goals and an assist each to lead the 14th-ranked Knights, 16-6, over the Elizabeth City-based charter school.

    M. Meekins scored a goal and had two assists, while Makayla Shea had a goal and an assist for the Knights. Kellie Woodard, Emily Anderson and Emma Frierdich also each had a goal.

    Goalkeeper Walls had five saves on five shots on goal and one save on a penalty kick for the Knights, who play at home against No. 25-ranked Northside-Jacksonville, 9-8-2, on Monday.
