It was a glorious day for track and field May 7 when teams from 10 schools competed in the Section 6AAA True Team Meet.

Coach Lynn Sosnowski of Edina watched her team finish third behind Roseville and Mounds View. With that finish, Sosnowski hoped her team would make it to state True Team as a wild-card entry. But Edina was not awarded that berth Sonsnowski found out last Saturday morning.

“I wanted it to be a stress-free meet for our athletes,” Sosnowski said. “This meet was the most fun they have had all season, and they did a phenomenal job. Roseville won the meet with 1108 points and both Mounds view and Edin passed the 1000-point mark.

Junior Molly Bennett went on a scoring spree for the Hornets, even though she only had two events. Athletes were allowed to enter four events.

Bennett flew to first place in the 100-meter dash with a personal record of 12.84 seconds. She followed up by taking second place in the 200 in 25.89.

“Molly always does well,” Sosnowski said. “She is one of our leaders.”

Another Hornet leader, senior high jumper Maria Matysik, achieved a season-best height of 5 feet, 4 inches. Megan Schoenke of Minneapolis Southwest tied Matysik for first place in a jump competition that attracted many spectators.

Sticking with field events, coach Sosnowski was thrilled with the progress of her throwers.

“In the past, we were lucky if we got 10 points in the discus,” she said. But this year the Hornets have turned the corner. Sophomore Tahlia Fahrendorff threw 104 feet, 8 inches for big points on a third-place finish. Teammate Elyse Miller, a junior, threw 97-8 for third place.

“Each of our discus girls threw at least 94 feet,” Sosnowski noted.

The Hornets had success in the pole vault, as well, with senior Phoebe Passolt clearing 8 feet, 6 inches for sixth place and junior Kate Hudson setting a personal record of 9 feet for fifth place.

Junior Reese McConnell, the goalie for Edina’s state-champion girls hockey team, cleared 4-10 to add high jump points with a fifth-place finish. Junior Ellie Huber gave Edina sixth place in the long jump. Senior Sophia Braun and junior Honorina Yepez gave Edina fifth and ninth places in the triple jump.

Some of the other Edina highlights in running events were a third place from junior Olivia Brinkman in the 3200, ninth and 10th places from senior Julia Rapallini and junior Lizzie Drew in the 1600, seventh place from ninth-grader Ali Burns in the 400 and ninth-grader Jillian Miller’s fourth place in the 100 and sixth place in the 200. Braun led Edina’s hurdlers with eighth place in the 100s and seventh place in the 300s. Leah Nelson, Cece Ebbert and Braxton Pronley each made the top 10 in at least one of the hurdle events.

Edina placed in the top four in all four of the relays.

The Hornets took silver with their second place in the 4x200-meter relay with Matysik, Reese McConnell, Inge Schmidt and Afton Maiser running 4:04.77.

Huber, Lily Smoley, Charlotte Theirl and Maiser took fourth place in the 4x100. Theirl, Smoley, Schmidt and Yepez placed third in the 4x200. Sophia Sannes-Eckhoff, Anna Elliott, Ella Hinkie and Rapallini were fourth in the 4x800.
