SOUTHERN PINES — Ethan Boyette is in contention at the NCHSAA 3-A boys golf championships after the first round Monday at Longleaf Golf and Family Club, but the Fike High senior is going to have make up a lot of ground to win his first state title on his final try.

Boyette fired an even-par 72, six strokes off the pace of leader Ethan Paschal of Fayetteville Terry Sanford but there are 10 golfers between them. Boyette, the only competitor from the Times readership area, is tied with three others for 12th place. The four-time 3-A Quad County Conference champion was solid but unspectacular on the 6,611-yard layout, making three birdies but offsetting them with a double bogey on No. 3 and a bogey on No. 3 right after a birdie on 12.

Paschal collected eight birdies to lead Stuart W. Cramer’s Rich Wills and Greenville Rose junior Lake Williams, the 3-A East Regional champ, by a stroke. Three more are tied for fourth place, including Paschal’s Bulldogs teammate Thomas Horne, with 69s.

Terry Sanford, the Midwest Regional champion, sits in front with a 6-under 282 team score, two strokes ahead of East champion Rose at 284. Cramerton Cramer is third at 301 followed by Oak Grove and Kings Mountain at 308 to round out the top five.

South Johnston, the Quad County team champion, is tied for eighth with Lake Norman Charter at 29-over 317.

The final round is set for Tuesday, May 14, at Longleaf.
