    1964

May 14, 1964: “Greenway wins, Indians lose”

Greenway humbled Hibbing, 8-4, and Buhl took Grand Rapids 3-0, in District 28 baseball games Monday.

Stingy Jim Pahula tossed a no-hitter at the Indians at Legion field while his teammates picked up two runs in the first and one in the routh. Rod Kekkonen hurled a good game, limiting Buhl to three hits. The Rapids had three errors, Paula struck out 11 batters.

At Bovey, Greenway cut loose with four runs in the sixth inning to clinch what had been a close game. Hibbing had been ahead 2-1, before being tied at 2-2 and again at 4-4. Rich Ollila struck out seven, walked three, and gave six scattered hits for the Raider victory. All-round Greenway athlete Bill Predovih paced the hitters with three hits in four at-bats.

    1974

May 16, 1974: “Baseball team plays Streaks”

Coach Bob Streetar’s Grand Rapids high school baseball team beat Bigfork 12-0, Wednesday afternoon and will play Chisholm Thursday at Legion field for the District 28 regular season title. Track teams will compete at 4 p.m. in the IRC meet.

Grand Rapids is now 10-2, with the only losses by one-run margins to Little Falls, 4-2, and Chisholm 9-8. Chisholm or Grand Rapids will be in first place when the district tournament starts May 23 at Legion Field, Hibbing will probably be third and Greenway, fourth.

Streetar plans to start Tony Jacobson, but all of his pitchers are ready and rested. Bryan (Tryg) Trygstad, who suffered a shoulder separation in the first game of the season, worked three good innings Wednesday, and eighth grader Jim Jetland went four and was credited with the victory, his fourth of the season.

In a brief report to the Sports Boosters club Wednesday night, Coach Streetar said that the Indians have been playing “pretty good defense, not making many mistakes.” He has hard-hitting Mike Johnson behind the plate, Jim Columbus at first, Roy Woodbury at second, Tom Graupmann at short, Paul Stejskal at third, and Kevin Avery, Mark DeCenzo and Dan Makinen in the outfield.

“It all comes to a head tomorrow,” Streetar says. “We don’t want to be rained out - we want the game played.”

Just a short walk from Legion field through the woods to the west, Coach Mike Nielsen's track team will be fighting for the Iron Range conference title. Nielsen told Sports Boosters that he figures Aurora as the strongest entry because of outstanding competitors in the half-mile, the mile, pole vault, the hurdles, and the shot put.

Nielsen’s club will score with Don Emblom in the sprints and Joe Pollard in the high jump and long jump, but points are less certain elsewhere. Ron Campell will be a top entry in what Nielsen predicts may be the best mile race on the Range in years. His relay teams have also fared well this year and must be considered threats.

Sports Boosters elected Harold Balsiger president, Dave Anderson vice president, Ted Betts secretary and Bill McDonal treasurer.
