A Breaking News Coverage award was granted for coverage of the death of the late Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.). KCBS Reporter Mike DeWald reported from outside the longtime lawmaker’s home after she passed away at age 90.

For 24 hours following the announcement of Feinstein’s passing, the station offered comprehensive coverage of her life and legacy, reported fairly and accurately. Reporters and anchors from KCBS reported it in a way that only her hometown news station could – drawing on contacts and connections to provide a unique perspective on one of the nation’s most unique lawmakers.

KCBS Radio also earned a regional Murrow for Excellence in Sound for its “Strike Music” segment.

“This piece was produced as a B-side to my mainbar coverage of the Oakland USD teachers strike. As I was following the march of teachers through the Fruitvale district of Oakland I noticed the prominent role of musicians in guiding and inspiring the marchers,” explained anchor Kris Ankarlo. “I started approaching individual musicians for interviews during the march and subsequent rally, asking each person what instrument they played and why they were there. I ended up with about a dozen different soundfiles that I layered together, instrument by instrument, voice by voice building to the raw audio I recorded of the band playing at the head of the march.”

RTDNA is the world’s largest broadcast and digital journalism professional organization. It was founded in 1946 to promote and protect responsible journalism.
