Recent clean-up nets tons of trash

Escambia County Commissioners head about tons of trash and debris being disposed of during the recent Earth Day observation across the entire county.
County Engineer Parker Ross said the event brought residents to dumpsters set up across the county with what ended up being “tons” of trash and debris.
“Between all of our locations we took in nine 40-yard roll-off dumpsters full of debris,” Ross said. “The Sheriff’s litter crews also picked up around 2,000 pounds of trash along county roads. That’s a lot of paper, coke bottles and trash.”
In addition to the dumpsters for residential trash and debris, Ross said there were four collection sites for old tires and electronics.
“We collected close to 20 tons of scrap tires from our citizens,” Ross said. “That was the biggest need in the county. On top of that we collected eight boxes of electronics and hauled off another eight boxes from the we before. Those boxes were full of electronics were found by the litter crews who found them along their route.”
Ross offered thanks to partners in the event including the Poarch Band of Creek Indians, the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office, the Escambia County Highway Department; Advance Environmental, Republic Services, the City of Flomaton and Flomaton Fire Department, Ransom Ministries and Little Tire Hauling.
“We also want to thank the citizens and organizations like (Coastal Alabama ) the college for picking up and making this a success,” Ross said. “Roadside litter is the top call we get from citizens at the highway department.”
Chairman Raymond Wiggins also offered his thanks to those that helped with the annual clean-up across the county.
“This was certainly a success throughout the county,” Wiggins said. “A lot of people did a lot of work to help make our county cleaner.”
Commissioner Larry White said the event was also a learning time for everyone involved.
“Our Engineers made this a great success,” White said. “Hopefully, we learned some things to make it better through the year.”
In other business during Monday’s meeting of the Commission:
• Approved the adoption of resolution 20240513 for the CDBG-CV sewer project in North Brewton;
• Approved the submission of a list of Escambia County Volunteer Fire Department’s to participate in the ADECA surplus property program;
• Approved the job description and position for an assistant county administrator;
• Approved painting of the Escambia County Courthouse;
• Executed an interagency agreement between Poarch Band of Creek Indians and the Commission to approve the installation of sidewalks on the county right-of-way;
• Awarded a bid for concrete pipe to Alabama Pipe Supply for the remainder of the fiscal year;
• Approved applications for an off-premise beer and table wine through the Alabama Beverage Control Board for a new Dollar General location at 2958 Old Hwy. 31, and a transfer application to the Anna Travel Center located at 13288 Hwy. 113.
