    Caesar Rodney tops Smyrna for first boys' volleyball state tourney win and other scores

    CAMDEN — Fifth-seeded Caesar Rodney High downed No. 12 Smyrna, 3-1, in the opening round of the DIAA boys’ volleyball state tournament on Tuesday evening.

    The Riders (14-2), who are in their second season, earned the program’s first state tourney victory by scores of 25-19, 25-23, 22-25, 25-13.

    Caesar Rodney next plays at No. 4 Appoquinimink on Saturday at 2 p.m. in the state quarterfinals. The Jaguars beat No. 13 Delcastle, 3-0, in their first-round match.

    The Riders, who beat the Eagles for the third time this season, were led by Aden Anderson (14 kills, 3 blocks, 5 digs), Jamal Alsadrani (19 kills, 1 ace, 1 block, 2 digs), Matthew Ascetta (9 kills, 1 ace, 6 digs), Xylord Martin (8 kills, 9 digs) and Aidan Webb (36 assists, 2 kills, 1 ace, 4 digs).

    Smyrna finishes the season at 8-8.

    Girls’ lacrosse

    Archmere 17, Smyrna 5: The No. 8 Auks built a 9-4 halftime lead before downing the No. 9 Eagles in the first round of the DIAA state tournament on Tuesday.

    Archmere (12-4) advances to a quarterfinal matchup at No. 1 Cape Henlopen (15-0) on Saturday at noon.

    Smyrna finishes with a record of 12-4. Alexis Hutchison scored twice with Dru Moffett, Evelyn Melesio and Ava Pierce adding the Eagles’ other goals.

    CR to host Tower Hill: Third-seeded Caesar Rodney will host No. 6 Tower Hill on Saturday at 8 p.m. in the state quarterfinals.

    The Hillers downed No. 11 Sanford, 21-13, in Tuesday’s opening round.
