The Titus County Retired School Personnel Association awarded their annual scholarship at a noon luncheon on May 13.

This year’s recipients are Acaceli Landaverde and Zoe Newman of Mt. Pleasant High School and Abigail Thrapp of Chapel Hill High School.

Araceli is the daughter of Virginia Landaverde. In the fall, Araceli will attend Northeast Texas Community College and major in upper level Education. Her goal for her future students is “to advocate for the well-being of students’ mental and physical health” by teaching human growth and development “in hopes of giving rise to a new generation of educators.”

Zoe is the daughter of Marty and Rhonda Newman. She will attend Midwestern State University pursuing a degree in Music Education with a minor in English and plans to teach band or English at the secondary level. Following in the footsteps of her parents, Zoe states, “I want to have a career where I can provide the same love and attention I have seen my parents give their students.” They believe “teaching is a calling,” and Zoe affirms, “I am here to answer the call!”

Abigail is the daughter of Jack and Dana Thrapp. Throughout high school, she has prepared for a career in education by taking dual credit upper level education courses at NTCC and will study at Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, Oklahoma this fall. She aspires to teach math or science at the lower elementary level. She sums up her goals by saying, “I know there are many challenges in today’s world of education, but loving kids and wanting the best for them never goes out of style.”

The organization congratulates these scholarship recipients and wishes them much success in their journey to becoming future educators.

The retirees of 2024 are as follows:

    • Debbie Ashley, Career Training Center and Tiger Cup Cafe (over 10 years)

    • Marshall Hosey, IT (20 years)

    • Nan Verner, music at E.C. Brice (23 years)

    • Peggy Taylor, cafetera at P.E. Wallace (19 years)
