The Pokémon Company just held its big, celebratory Pokémon Day presentation, and while it was filled with a few different neat announcements, one in particular stole the show. The Pokémon Company officially announced a new Pokémon Legends game, Pokémon Legends: Z-A.

Pokémon Legends: Z-A is a follow-up to Legends: Arceus, and is set within Lumiose City in the Kalos region. Nintendo of America says it’s set entirely within Lumiose City, which is a little bit difficult to believe, but does suggest that Game Freak is cooking with this one.

We don’t know a whole lot about the upcoming game, despite having an almost two-minute trailer about it during the Pokémon Presents. The trailer shows us some wireframes of Lumiose, in a way that is very reminiscent of blueprints, and shows us that the Lumiose City redevelopment project has begun.

It’s a little bit hard to tell if Legends: Z-A features a Lumiose set in the past or set in the future — some of the sketches look quite old, but the wireframe stuff looks modernistic. It’s a mystery at this stage, but we’re leaning towards the past right now — if only because it would potentially mean that Legends: Arceus characters could appear, and that would be neat.

We actually predicted that a Kalos game could be the next main series Pokémon game when we made our predictions earlier this month. It was a bit of a throwaway suggestion at the time, but the signs did somewhat point to Kalos, as we explained in the article.

Pokémon Legends: Z-A will be launching worldwide in 2025, on the same date everywhere globally. That’s a bit of an interesting reveal, because it means that 2024 won’t be having a main series Pokémon game. We’re not surprised, especially after the disastrous launch – technically, of course – of Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, which launched in a buggy, broken state. Giving Game Freak a little bit more time to iron out the bugs is a great idea.
