The Monticello Senior Center has an enjoyable trip to New Ulm coming up on Wednesday, July 17. The first stop on this trip will be at the Visitors Center, where a local guide will step on the motor coach for a riding tour. We will learn about the downtown architecture, see Herman Monument, drive past Gov. John Lind’s home as well as historic churches, museums and memorials. The riding tour concludes at the Glockenspiel Musical Tower where we will hear the bells chime the time of day in Westminster style.

Participants can then walk a block, or hop back on the bus, to have lunch at Veigel’s Kaiserhoff Restaurant, where a choice of two meals will be offered — Landjaeger old-German-style pork and beef smoked sausage with hot german potato salad, sauerkraut and rye bread; or a beer-battered cod basket with french fries and coleslaw.

After lunch, we will tour the August Schell’s Brewery. We will be walking or standing for over an hour on this tour, and collapsible wheelchairs, walkers, and canes will fit in the motor coach luggage bays. We will have time to visit the museum and sample beers in the tap room. Following the tour, attendees may stroll through the gardens and spend time in the gift store before departing for home. The cost is $89 per person and the bus will depart the community center at 7:30 a.m., and return at about 5:45 p.m.

Call the senior center at 763-295-2000 if you wish to take advantage of our Legal Aid service that will be held on Tuesday, May 28. The Senior Law Project at Mid-Minnesota Legal Aid provides free legal services to people age 60 and over. This program can assist with many issues including Social Security and SSI; consumer, nursing home, and landlord problems; powers of attorney; health care directives; family law issues; and more. Please note that help cannot be given for criminal matters, wills, real estate transactions, or estate planning.

You can also call us if you drive a vehicle and want the opportunity to save money. People age 55-plus completing a defensive driving class are eligible to receive a 10% auto insurance discount. The cost is $25. Four-hour refresher courses for those who have previously completed an eight-hour class will be held at the center on June 13, July 24 and Aug. 29 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. You can give us a call for more dates. Drop off or mail payment, cash or check, to the center in advance. Please note that refunds will not be given for no-shows.

There is no charge for people to get help with technological issues. Bring your personal device, laptop, tablet, or smartphone, and connect with an experienced digital handyperson who can help you: adjust settings for basic use, communication, online safety, and security; personalize your device for your needs and interests; find and use functions, services, and apps that will be most helpful to you. You do need to call us to make an appointment for this service that is offered every Tuesday morning.

The senior center’s River City Riders bike group have planned some really great trail rides for the 2024 season. Stop by the center to pick up a list of the Thursday morning ride destinations if you are interested. You can also be added to the group email list to receive details on each week’s ride. It’s great exercise and great fun, so check it out.
