Butterwood Road work delayed slightly

It started a bit later than expected and as a result, it’s going to take a bit longer to complete. Instead of shutting down Butterwood Road on May 8 as originally planned, officials with the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) started their work on Monday, May 13 instead.

“Weather pushed us back a week,” said Len Stevens. He works as VDOT District Communications Manager for the Lynchburg region, which includes Charlotte County.

A series of storms, some of them including hail and high winds, caused the delay last week and now multiple days of rain looks like it will hold work for part of this one as well. But when crews are able to get back to work, they will be handling a pipe replacement on Route 664, Butterwood Road.

VDOT officials said there’s no way to keep at least part of that section of the road open during the process, due to where the pipe is located. So instead, VDOT officials will be setting up a detour, marking it with signs. Residents will be asked to travel on Route 615, Rolling Hills Road, then connecting with Route 47, Thomas Jefferson Highway and finally Route 665, Harvey Road, before making it back to Butterwood.

As for when work will be finished? That depends, as the National Weather Service shows the potential for a few more major storms in the next seven days. But as of now, Stevens said VDOT plans to reopen Butterwood on June 14.
