The Pope said “greed” was a major cause of the climate crisis. According to Vatican News, he said, “The wealthier nations, around 1 billion people, produce more than half the heat-trapping pollutants. On the contrary, the 3 billion poorer people contribute less than 10%, yet they suffer 75% of the resulting damage.”

His criticism did not end there. “We find ourselves faced with systemic challenges that are distinct yet interconnected: climate change, the loss of biodiversity, environmental decay, global disparities, lack of food security and threats to the dignity of the peoples affected by them.” Once again, their target here is those who affect the “dignity of the poor.”

    Pope’s Point About Poor Nations

The Pope makes a point that several others have. While rich nations produce most greenhouse gasses, they have also offered to find poor nations where they attempt to lower their emissions. This money has often been unavailable, so improvement from these nations will not occur.

In the meantime, countries, particularly the US and China, use vast amounts of carbon-based energy, and this use has not slowed despite a rise in renewable power sources.
