Martin County, FL – Accordong to the Martin County Sheriff's Office, in an exemplary display of teamwork and dedication, the Martin County Sheriff's Office (MCSO) Marine Unit and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) successfully rescued an injured manatee today.

    Rescue Operation

The rescue operation began when FWC notified MCSO, requesting assistance in locating an injured manatee in the Manatee Pocket area. The distressed sea cow appeared to have been struck by a boat propeller, resulting in visible injuries.

MCSO's Marine Unit quickly joined forces with FWC to track the injured manatee. Once located, FWC, along with their dedicated volunteers and rescue workers, skillfully maneuvered the mammal onto a boat and transported it to Sandsprit Park.

    Medical Concerns

In addition to the injury caused by the boat propeller, the manatee was found to have a medical problem with its lung, further complicating its condition. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, FWC arranged for the manatee's transport to SeaWorld in Orlando.

The gentle giant was safely delivered to SeaWorld, where marine experts are set to begin the treatment and recovery process. The team at SeaWorld will provide the necessary medical care to address both the external injury and the lung issue, giving the manatee the best chance for a full recovery.

This successful rescue operation highlights the incredible cooperation between MCSO, FWC, and the community of volunteers and rescue workers. Their swift and efficient actions demonstrate a shared commitment to protecting and preserving Florida's marine wildlife.

This incident serves as a crucial reminder of the importance of boating safety and vigilance in areas known to be inhabited by manatees. Boaters are urged to be mindful of their surroundings and adhere to speed regulations to prevent future accidents and ensure the safety of these gentle creatures.
