(WYTV) – You can find all kinds of fruits and vegetables in season now, and they can be a great addition to any meal. But, before you take that first bite, wash them.

For example, your knife could carry bacteria or pesticides from a melon rind into the fruit. Wash right before you plan to eat your fruits and vegetables, that way it doesn’t affect the texture or the flavor.

“No need to soak it in vinegar. I’ve seen some recommendations for baking soda. Of course, there are some commercial products that some people like to use to kind of get the wax or potential pesticides off the fruits and vegetables, and that’s certainly your own preference. But usually just running water is going to be the best way,” said Beth Czerwony, RD with the Cleveland Clinic.

The most common bacteria we find on fruits and vegetables include salmonella, e coli and listeria.
