Streamer Scraps Spider-Man Spinoff Series Silk: Spider Society

Amazon has reportedly dumped the upcoming drama series Silk: Spider Society, after years of silence on the project.

Silk: Spider Society was in development from Walking Dead showrunner Angela Kang, and would have been set in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe series of film and television, which includes the Venom films, Madame Web, and upcoming films like Kraven the Hunter. It notably does not include animated films like Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse and its sequel, and in fact does not include any Spider-Man as of yet.

THR has reported that the series is now being shopped around for a new owner, now that it won’t be appearing on Amazon Prime Video, and that Angela Kang will no longer be attached to the project. Kang has reportedly signed an “eight-figure deal” with Amazon and will stay with the company to develop other projects.

The live-action series would have focused on Cindy Moon, a Korean-American Spider-Person better known by her superhero title, Silk. Silk is also set to appear in Spider-Verse spinoff film Spider-Women, alongside Gwen Stacy – often called Spider-Gwen and officially either Spider-Woman or Ghost-Spider – and Jess Drew, Spider-Woman.

The project was announced in late-2022, and was reportedly in the early writing phase when the WGA strike started last year. The strike put a halt to writing, and Amazon used the downtime to reassess the project, it’s claimed.

Curiously, though, it doesn’t seem to be the Spider-Stuff that Amazon isn’t keen on, as it announced earlier in the week that a live-action series featuring Nicolas Cage as Spider-Man Noir – reprising the role from Into the Spider-Verse – would be going ahead with production. Noir, as the series is called, will debut first on MGM+ in the US, before moving onto Amazon Prime Video. No release date has been set for the series, which is believed to be in the pre-production phase of development.

Sony’s Spider-Man Universe will continue this year with two films — Venom: The Last Dance will be released on October 25, 2024, while Kraven the Hunter will be released on December 13, 2024.
