Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has released a trailer and revealed a home digital release date for its upcoming documentary The Mountain Within Me.

The documentary, which was directed by award-winning director Polly Steele, follows former professional rugby football player Ed Jackson following a devastating spinal cord injury. Jackson was at the height of his rugby career when, in 2017, suffered a fractured C6/C7 joint dislocation after jumping into the shallow end of a pool.

Since then, he’s climbed multiple mountains, presented as a rugby reporter, and covered the Paralympic Games as a presenter. He also opened a not-for-profit organization called M2M, through which he raises money to help support those facing mental health challenges.

The trailer opens on Jackson climbing the side of a very sheer rock face, in what looks like an absolutely terrifying and difficult ordeal for anyone, let alone somebody who suffered a severe spinal injury. Jackson introduces himself and reveals what happened, with some teary admissions that he was in a dark place for a while following the injury.

The documentary follows his recovery process, from the tiny first steps following his injury all the way up to his climb of Snowdon, the Alps, and the Himalayas. Here’s how Universal describes the film:

Ed Jackson is a former athlete who trained at the highest level, but in April 2017 he was involved in a serious accident where he broke his neck and a serious spinal cord injury. This left him paralyzed from the neck down and doctors told him he would never walk again. When faced with life-changing injuries, Ed Jackson harnessed his determination to create a future for himself, his wife and his family that most thought impossible.

This documentary follows Ed, and his wife Lois, as they undertake an extraordinary journey through the past and present and honestly discuss their future and the impact of living with a disability.

The Mountain Within me is set to be released digitally to rent and to own on August 20, 2024.
