Frey Ranch announced the release of its 100% Wheat Whiskey Single Barrel on May 10. The release marks the first cask-strength whiskey from the Nevada brand's Single Grain Series. The whiskey was distilled exclusively from soft white winter wheat grown at the Frey Ranch Farm by co-founder and "whiskey farmer" Colby Frey. It hosts a suggested retail price of $114 for a bottle and ranges in cask strength from 116.8 proof to 134.4 proof depending on the barrel, according to the brand.
"Our slow grown grains are at the core of who we are as an American Whiskey brand, so we'll continue to experiment with different mashbills that showcase the high quality and unique flavor profiles of these single grain variations," Frey said in a news release. "Frey Ranch 100% Wheat Whiskey Single Barrel is the first cask strength release from our Single Grain Series, and we're looking forward to sharing this with the whiskey community."
This latest release has dropped just in time for Frey Ranch to celebrate its 10th anniversary. The brand claimed the whiskey was aged in barrels between six years and two months to seven years and eight months and describes the finished product as a "sugar bomb" in terms of flavor profile. Distiller reports that for a whiskey to be classified as a wheat whiskey in America, the whiskey must not have a higher proof than 160 during the distillation process. The wheated whiskey must be aged in new charred oak barrels and not have a proof higher than 125 when entering the barrel. It must be bottled at 80 proof or higher. Wheated whiskeys need to have mashbills with a minimum of 51% wheat to achieve this classification and typically have a sweeter flavor profile, making them great options for any whiskey drinker with a sweet tooth. This latest release follows Frey Ranch's
November limited release of an American Single Malt. Frey shared that the brand built a smoker and smoked the grain grown at the Nevada-based farm-to-glass distillery.
