What a treat it is to be able to go outside and enjoy a cool spring morning with birds singing and the smell of honeysuckle or jasmine in the air.

It’s that time of year when it seems like overnight there was a mass explosion of green leaves and beautifully colored blooms. The strawberry fields are still ripe for picking and blueberries will be ready shortly.

Many of us are delighted in the spring and summer with peonies, rhododendrons, hydrangeas, gardenias and roses plus hundreds of other flowers, fruits and vegetables. God created a magnificent world for us to inhabit. It is no coincidence that before Mother’s Day even the small-town local grocery stores had impressive displays of cut floral arrangements and flowering potted plants. It was worth a trip to the grocer just to take in the fragrances. Flowers tend to spark joy.

Spring often cheers us up and reminds us of the hope we have because God designed such spectacular gifts with you and me in mind. Many passages of Scripture call us to rejoice in God’s wonders.

“The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake.” Psalm 23:1-3

“Splendor and majesty are before him; strength and glory are in his sanctuary. Ascribe to the Lord, all you families of nations, ascribe to the Lord glory and strength. Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name; bring an offering and come into his courts. Worship the Lord in the splendor of his holiness; tremble before him, all the earth. Say among the nations, ‘The Lord reigns.’ The world is firmly established, it cannot be moved; he will judge the peoples with equity. Let the heavens rejoice, let the earth be glad; let the sea resound, and all that is in it. Let the fields be jubilant, and everything in them; let all the trees of the forest sing for joy. Let all creation rejoice before the Lord, for he comes, he comes to judge the earth. He will judge the world in righteousness and the peoples in his faithfulness.” Psalm 96:6-13

“Shout for joy to the Lord, all the Earth, burst into jubilant song with music; make music to the Lord with the harp, with the harp and the sound of singing, with trumpets and the blast of the ram’s horn — shout for joy before the Lord, the King. Let the sea resound, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it. Let the rivers clap their hands, let the mountains sing together for joy; let them sing before the Lord, for he comes to judge the earth. He will judge the world in righteousness and the peoples with equity.” Psalm 98:4-9

“Consider how the wild flowers grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you, not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these.” Luke 12:27

May the love of God — Father, Son and Holy Spirit — revitalize us and boost our spirits this season, even if we find ourselves in the midst of difficult circumstances. We give God thanks for his goodness and provision, especially as we witness his glorious creativity in nature.
