NASSAU, Bahamas — Texas A&M University- Commerce will be represented at the 2024 Summer Olympic Games in Paris, France, later this summer as track & field student-athlete Ibrahim Fuseini clinched his ticket to Paris last Sunday.

Fuseini qualified for the 4x100 meter relay for his home country of Ghana, after winning the heat in the second round of Olympic Qualification at the World Athletics Relays in Nassau.

A total of 16 countries qualify for the Olympic games in each of the relay races and Ghana was one of 14 to punch its ticket this weekend in the Bahamas for the men's 4x100 meter relay.

Ghana missed out on securing a bid to Paris on May 4 after being disqualified in the first round, thus missing out on the World Athletics Relays finals, that were contested last Sunday night, but all countries that failed to qualify last Saturday, had a second chance the following night.

Fuseini ran the first leg of the 4x100 meter relay for team Ghana, who was in the second heat on Sunday night and needed to finish in the top two in its heat to qualify for the Olympics. Team Ghana posted a time 38.29 seconds to punch its ticket from Paradise to Paris.

Almost a year to the day, Fuseini was part of the Lions' Southland Conference- winning 4x100 meter relay, which set a SLC Championships record, school record, and Memorial Stadium record with a time of 39.38 seconds.

The 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris are slated for July 24 to Aug. 11. The Athletics events begin on Aug. 1 and the first round of the men's 4x100 meter relay is scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 8.

A&M-Commerce had two additional former or current Lions in contention for an Olympic bid at the World Athletics Relays as well. Oguz Uyar and Team Turkey missed out on qualification in the men's 4x100 meter relay, while alum Mariana Shostak ran the anchor leg for Team Ukraine in the women's 4x400 meter relay, missing out on qualification as well.
