A recent study has confirmed what many residents of Southern California have long suspected: the Inland Empire holds the title for the worst air quality in the United States. According to a study conducted by SmartSurvey, the region encompassing Riverside, San Bernardino, and Ontario experienced the poorest overall air quality in 2023, based on 12 metrics used to measure air pollution.

The study revealed that the Inland Empire tallied only 54 days with "good" air quality throughout the entire year. In stark contrast, the area suffered through 59 days with air quality deemed "unhealthy" for sensitive groups, marking a significant concern for the health and well-being of its residents.

The region's poor air quality can be attributed to a combination of factors, including high levels of vehicle emissions, industrial pollutants, and geographical conditions that trap smog and particulate matter. The Inland Empire's proximity to major transportation corridors and its significant warehouse and logistics industry further exacerbate the problem.
